Breathtaking. That’s the first word that came to mind when reviewing Healing of the Hearts. From the first page, I was immersed in the lives of Rudy McCoy and Rex Truett. Loree Lough had a way of drawing you in so that you felt like you were right there next to them, living the story with them.
What I Liked:
I loved the small town of Fairplay. I enjoyed the romantic scenes between Rudy and Rex as they tried to understand each other. I was riveted by the chemistry portrayed between them. There was a ton of chemistry, but done in a clean way that made it so you could enjoy each scene. I had a hard time stepping away from the book for even a moment. Rudy’s mother and Rex’s aunt were both colorful characters that made you laugh at their shenanigans.
The characters were very real. They had flaws and strengths– pasts riddled with joys and grief. You felt like you were transported back to the 1800’s.
What I Disliked:
Every author has something that they can improve in their writing. However, I can’t think of anything. It does move at a slightly slower pace because of it being historical fiction, but that’s because the people back then lived a slower pace. So that is not a negative. In general, I prefer contemporary fiction, but while the story moved at a slower pace, it never stalled. The story continued. The characters evolved. You could see Christ working in their lives. You didn’t want to end.
If you are looking for a good, clean romance, this is a great book to read. If you enjoy historical fiction, this is also a good read. I would give this book five stars. I was given a complimentary book by Celebrate Lit and the author to review. All views are my own.
About the Book
When Ruby McCoy and her mother arrive in Fairplay and promptly move into the biggest mansion around, they are the talk of the town. But while Mrs. McCoy worries about ribbons, trunks, and wallpaper, Ruby rolls up her sleeves. Since the hanging of her notorious gangster father five years ago, Ruby, hiding under an assumed name, is on a mission to right her father’s wrongs. She is determined to spend every penny of her inherited “blood money” helping those who paid the price for her father’s crimes. But she didn’t plan on falling in love.
Sheriff Rex Truett doesn’t trust Ruby and doesn’t care who knows it. The keeper of Fairplay’s law and order makes it his business to find out why a stranger—especially a beautiful, rich, female stranger—would set up businesses, donate to schools, hire workmen to rebuild houses, and provide access to the best medical care. But when a cholera epidemic sweeps through the city, he is forced to reconsider.
Will Ruby have the courage to tell Rex her family secret? And will love or justice win in Rex’s heart?
